About
Jason Butler joined Greater Sum Ventures in 2021, where he leads technology and IT strategy with a focus on payments integration and innovation. A three-time founder and seasoned technology leader, Jason brings nearly two decades of experience in software, payments, and scaling SaaS businesses.
Before GSV, Jason served in senior technology roles at Community Brands and Ministry Brands, where he spent a decade leading IT, product development, and payments strategy. He co-founded SimpleGive in 2007—his third company and the first acquisition that became part of what would later evolve into Ministry Brands. After the acquisition, he served as CTO, and ultimately Chief Payments Officer, helping guide the company through rapid growth and three successful recapitalizations.
Earlier in his career, Jason spent 13 years in software engineering at FedEx, where he built foundational expertise in programming and systems design. A lifelong operator with a B.S. in Computer Science and an MBA, Jason’s superpower lies in helping SaaS companies unlock value through integrated payments—improving both the customer experience and financial performance.
Q&A
Where do you drive the most impact for the portfolio?
My operating superpower is payments, so the quickest impact is normally in the areas of monetization, derived from contract negotiations, residual audits, interchange optimization, and pricing reviews. We currently have $60B+ processing through GSV companies and have relationships with most of the major processing partner options in the US. Longer tail impacts are around product and how to build a sticker integration that provides more value to the users.
What advice would you give your younger self?
I was a little too risk averse early on—so, don’t be afraid to take some risks. Believe in yourself, and then enjoy the journey. That being said, the decisions in the past led me to where I am now and I’m incredibly grateful for it. I wouldn’t rather be anywhere else.
