About
John Cimba is an Operating Executive at GSV and currently serves as the CEO of Stax, a GSV portfolio company. With more than 20 years of operating experience, John brings deep empathy and practical insight to companies navigating the transition from founder-led growth to institutional scale.
As a successfully exited founder, John is especially effective at bridging the gap between founders who have recently sold and GSV’s operating team. The former CEO of GSV platform PropertyTek, he helps leaders understand their evolving role post-transaction and align around a shared path toward the next phase of value creation—and ultimately, exit.
At GSV, John is focused on identifying and supporting opportunities in the sub-$10M revenue range, where disciplined execution and the right playbook can unlock outsized returns. His operating philosophy is grounded in collaboration and humility, shaped by a core belief that the best outcomes come from surrounding yourself with people who are experts in their respective domains.
John also believes strongly in founder education—helping entrepreneurs understand the differences between venture capital and growth-oriented private equity, and how each serves companies at different stages of maturity.
Q&A
Why GSV?
GSV is made up of people like me, who once owned and/or operated a company. It’s not a team that just lives in the Excel spreadsheet. Don’t get me wrong, data is VERY important, but the right data in the hands of true operators brings the greatest likelihood for success.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Check your ego at the door. There are people smarter than you and if you lead alongside the right team vs leading “over them”, great things can happen.
